Swindon Designer Outlet is housed in the renovated Grade II listed buildings of the Great Western Railway Works and is one of the largest covered designer outlets in Europe with 249,100 sq ft of retail space and 123 stores. It is owned by Nuveen Real Estate and managed by McArthurGlen.
In March 2018, EP&T Global completed the installation of its energy monitoring hardware and commenced its energy optimisation programme in partnership with the site management team at Swindon Designer Outlet. The ongoing objective is to reduce operational energy consumption without compromising comfort conditions for retailers and shoppers.
EP&T Global’s edge software effectively undertakes a ‘digital energy audit’ every 15-minutes, rapidly analysing over 3,500 data points per day to identify energy saving opportunities. These are raised via the edge software platform and discussed with the site team on a monthly basis. Some examples of the energy saving initiatives implemented are shown below:
- Adjustment of set-points to avoid over-heating during winter months.
- Installation of timers to operate heating and cooling equipment in line with demand.
- Development of manual procedures to avoid unnecessary energy use outside of opening hours.
- Identification and optimisation of equipment that could be controlled independent of the BMS.
- Isolation of equipment when not required.
The programme has achieved significant environmental and financial outcomes including a 30% overall energy reduction and 1,640 tonnes of avoided CO2 emissions (equivalent to 988 return flights from London to New York). As a result, the programme has paid for itself within just 17 months of operation.
